About Fairy Stone State Park

Fairy Stone State Park, located in Patrick County, Virginia, spans over 4,000 acres of forested land in the scenic Blue Ridge Highlands region. The park is named after the distinctive 'fairy stones'—naturally occurring staurolite crystals that form cross-shaped patterns, unique and sought after by visitors and geology enthusiasts alike. The landscape features rolling hills, mixed hardwood forests, several lakes, and streams that create a habitat for abundant wildlife including white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and numerous songbird species. The geography offers moderate elevation changes with trails traversing scenic overlooks, woodlands, and waterside routes.

The park's history dates back to its establishment in 1933 as Virginia’s first state park dedicated to preserving the rare fairy stones. Originally developed with the help of the Civilian Conservation Corps, the park today maintains rustic structures alongside modern amenities. Visitors can enjoy over 20 miles of hiking trails, a large lake for fishing and paddling, and campgrounds equipped for tent and RV camping. Facilities include a fishing pier, playground, swimming pool, and picnic areas. The park is a year-round destination that appeals to families, outdoor enthusiasts, and rock collectors. Its serene environment and well-maintained trails offer a quiet escape with opportunities to explore nature and geology unique to the region.
